Presentation:   ASHRAE recently released a new standard for the “Design of High Performance, Green Buildings” (Standard 189.1-2009).  The Standard provides minimum requirements for a high-performance green building, and was developed with the intent of balancing environmental factors involved with the sitting, design, construction, and planning for the operation of buildings.  This session provides a detailed look at the standard, background on its development and some discussion on how it might be used and adopted by various localities and organizations.

Speaker: THOMAS M. LAWRENCE, Ph.D, P.E., LEED-AP is a Public Service Associate with the University of Georgia, and has 30 years of professional experience in engineering and environmentally related fields. Before going back for his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue, he spent approximately 20 of those years in progressively more responsible engineering and management positions in industry and consulting. He is the chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee 2.8, “Building Environmental Impact and Sustainability”, and is a member of the committee which wrote the ASHRAE standard on high-performance green buildings (Standard 189.1). As an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, he gives presentations and workshops on green building design at venues around the world. At the University of Georgia, Dr. Lawrence teaches courses in Building HVAC, Green Building Design, Residential Building Design, and Heat Transfer. As part of the Engineering Outreach program, he is helping to coordinate building energy reduction activities within the entire university system for the state of Georgia.

Dr. Lawrence has a B.S. with Highest Distinction honors in Environmental Science from Purdue University (1978), a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University (1982) and a second M.S. degree in Engineering Management from Washington University earned in 1989. FEBRUARY LUNCH MEETING - How to Get Started with an Energy Efficiency Survey
21-01-2010 20:50 Matthew Rowe

Topic: JUST DO IT! How to Get Started with an Energy Efficiency Survey by ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Hank Jackson

Date: February 10, 2010
Time: 12:00 Noon Meeting - 1:30 PM
Location: Ramada Inn, 1520 Blue Ridge Rd. Raleigh

Cost: $25.00 for Lunch

Introduction: Tony Lewis will provide the Triangle Chapter with an update on Progress Energy's Energy Efficiency for Business Program.  Get up to speed on the program at: http://progressenergy.com/custservice/carbusiness/efficiency/programs/eebiz/details.asp.

Main Presentation: This session is designed to help building owners, operators, and engineers perform on-site energy efficiency surveys with more confidence and accuracy.  Specifically, this course is directed toward the on-site inspection and critical assessment of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems; refrigeration systems; lighting systems; compressed air; and motor applications typically found in buildings and process facilities. Attendees will receive a qualitative understanding of design and operation considerations for common systems and will learn site survey techniques to help them gather the information needed to evaluate the costs and benefits of a variety of energy-efficiency improvements.

Speaker: ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, Hank Jackson, owner and principal of ETech Solutions, has provided technical training and consulting services in the energy efficiency marketplace since 1979.  He holds a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering (1974) and a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering (1978), both from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia.  Originally registered in Georgia, Mr. Jacksons currently practices in North Carolina. Mr. Jackson served as director of the Georgia Industrial Energy Extension Service program at the Georgia Institute of Technology prior to entering a private consulting practice.  During a five year hiatus from consulting (1999 – 2005), he was department chair of Mechanical Engineering Technology at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in Asheville, North Carolina.
